Excerpt from “Hell, No” in Turning Point

“There was a period in my life when I felt like I had a split personality. Not full-blown Sybil stuff, but troublesome, nonetheless. I put on my game face at work to fulfill my role but was a different person in my heart and home. I was working in a traditional allopathic pediatric office and seeing patients every ten to fifteen minutes, working in a model of care where “wellness visits” were focused primarily on vaccinations, and symptoms of illness were mostly treated with medications. These are important parts of pediatric care, but there was little individuality taken into account, or investigation of root causes. Nor was there much consideration of culture, religion, or values. There simply wasn’t enough time in this type of care. Children seemed to be getting sicker, and there was more chronic disease. Quantity rather than quality of care was emphasized. The culture of the office was racist, conformist, and toxic. I felt trapped in a patriarchal system of medicine, insurance, and big pharma.”
